Why It Is Better To Be Feared Than To Be Loved

Every person in this world is either loved or hated. In other words, people will either love or hate you. And it is your lifestyle or altitude to life that will determine what people feel for you. Obviously, there are people who tend to hurt you whether they love or hate you. The reason for this can only be explained by the person. Now let's refresh our understanding of the meaning of love: 1. Love is a feeling of intense attraction towards somebody. 2. A profound feeling of rust and security towards a person or a deity. 3. A feeling of care and mercy towards people or living beings in general. In other words, love can simply be defined as strong feeling of deep affection for somebody. The recipient of such feeling could be a family member, a relative or a friend. While fear is s strong, uncontrollable, unpleasant emotion caused by actual or perceived danger or threat. From the above definition, we can deduct that love is voluntary. Feeling love for somebody is an action within the whims and caprices of the giver which may be withdraw n. But fear is involuntary. The person who have fear of something cannot stop being afraid unless the object of fear is removed or withdrawn from them. Hence, fear arises out of perceived danger. And humans will always avoid confrontation with any perceived danger or threat. Machiavelli in his book entiled "The Prince" posited that it is better to be feared than to be loved. He stated it thus:. "it is better to be feared than loved. Fear you can control, but love you can never." Also, Robert Greene reflected this Machiavellian principle in his book entiled "48 Laws of Power and 33 strategies of War". Man under State of nature is wicked, brutish and cruel. This is stated by Thomas Hubbes after his study of man. People who plot against you will pretend to be your friend but behind you, they sought to do you harm. Therefore, to discourage people around you from harming you, you should make them fear you. And how do you do this? You do it by creating an impression of danger and threat around you. So that they would never plot against you. But when they love you, they do so bcs they chose to love you. And they could harm you if it will serve their best interest. But they fear you bcs they believe you have the capacity to harm. So you can control their fear by perpetuating that feeling in them through your actions.
