Many English language users do not know when to use or not to use an article in a sentence. They think it is irrelevant whether article is used, how it is used and where it is used. A text book I read that enabled me to write this article Do not use article with uncountable or with countable nouns in the plural or when talking in general: 1. I love flowers. 2. Honey is sweet 3. I bought flowers 4. Chuks bought two cars. 5. Are lawyers good people? 6. Do you have rice at home? Do not use article in names of countries, states, streets, ways, roads, towns and lakes: 1. I am going to France 2. I am from Anambra state 3. John lives in Abuja 4. He lives in Muritala way Jos 5. I live in Ideani street Onitsha 6. She lives in Azikiwe road Aba 7. Let's go to Agulu lake Do not use article in names of religion: 1. Buddhism originated in China 2. Christianity has its roots in Judaism 3. Hindustan originated in India Do not use article with a person's title when the name is mentioned: 1. President Buhari 2. Barrister chukwuka Christopher Okafor 3. Doctor Chris Ngige 4. Governor Willy Obiano Do not use article with words for meals, months and days of the week: 1. I invite you to lunch 2. He will visit in August 3. John comes on Mondays 4. I was born in October However, an article is used when describing a particular meal, month and day: 1. The lunch they served was delicious 2. We left on a Monday morning 3. He got here on the last day of December 2018 Do not use article when you're referring to a school, prison, jail or court. This is bcs they are referred to as an institution: 1.
